โ Whatโs on our mind?
As Canada celebrates a new population milestone, surpassing 41 million residents just in the first quarter of 2024, the country faces significant challenges when it comes to housing. Statistics Canada recently reported that the population jumped over 242K from January to March, marking a growth rate of 0.6%.
While this growth brings dynamism and diversity, it also amplifies existing issues, particularly in the rental housing market.
In May 2024, the cost of renting in Canada reached an all-time high, with average rents climbing to $2,202. This marks the first time rental prices have surpassed the $2,200 threshold, reflecting an alarming trend.
Affordable homes are disappearing rapidly, leaving many Canadians struggling to find housing that fits their budget. A CBC News analysis of over 1,000 neighbourhoods across Canadaโs largest cities reveals a dire situation: less than one percent of rentals are both vacant and affordable for most Canadian renters.
The data paints a stark picture of a market where demand far outpaces supply, driving prices to new heights and making affordable housing increasingly scarce.

Rea is reading: and understanding why the majority of Canadian Gen Zs are adopting dogs instead of having kids, especially considering the $13K annual difference.
Trieste is reading: about the strawberry moon we are supposed to see tomorrow night coinciding with the summer solstice. Sounds summery.
Jyoti is reading: and preparing for the summer heat waves. Especially considering theyโre predicting the heat will lead to mass power outages. Goodbye air conditioning.
