Wealthsimple's Credit Card: A Game Changer for Everyday Canadians

Wealthsimple, the Toronto-based fintech company, has unveiled its first credit card, setting the stage for a significant shift in Canada's financial landscape. This move challenges the traditional banking model and offers Canadians a fresh perspective on managing their finances.

A Fresh Approach to Credit

The Wealthsimple credit card introduces several features that differentiate it from conventional offerings:

  • Unlimited 2% Cashback: Earn 2% cashback on all purchases, with no spending categories or caps. This simplicity appeals to those tired of tracking rotating categories.

  • No Foreign Exchange Fees: Unlike many Canadian cards that charge up to 2.5% on foreign transactions, Wealthsimple's card eliminates these fees, making it ideal for travelers.

  • Waived Monthly Fee: The $10 monthly fee is waived for clients with over $100,000 in assets or those who set up a direct deposit of $4,000 or more. Others can still access the card for a fee.

  • Enhanced Security and Control: Features like instant card locking, PIN changes, and auto-pay options provide users with greater control over their finances.

Beyond Banking: A Vision for the Future

Wealthsimple's expansion into credit cards, along with its enhanced chequing account offering up to 2.75% interest and instant loans, signifies a broader ambition to redefine banking in Canada. CEO Mike Katchen emphasizes that the goal isn't to replicate traditional banks but to offer Canadians a more transparent and user-centric alternative.

Implications for Everyday Canadians

This development is particularly beneficial for Canadians who:

  • Travel Frequently: The elimination of foreign exchange fees can lead to significant savings.

  • Prefer Simplicity: The straightforward cashback model appeals to those who dislike complex rewards systems.

  • Seek Better Returns: With competitive interest rates on chequing balances, Wealthsimple offers an attractive alternative to traditional banks.

While the card is currently in a phased rollout, the full launch is anticipated soon. Canadians interested in this innovative financial product should consider joining the waitlist to be among the first to experience the future of banking.

Wealthsimple's credit card is more than just a new financial product; it's a step towards a more inclusive and customer-focused banking experience in Canada—and that’s something we can get behind.

Thank You for Celebrating 10 Years of FrontFundr With Us

To everyone who joined us on Tuesday night—thank you.

Ten years ago, the very first equity crowdfunding investment in Canada happened on FrontFundr. This week, we had the honour of celebrating a decade of progress toward more inclusive capital markets—surrounded by the people and companies who’ve helped shape this movement.

The room at OneEleven in Toronto was filled with energy, connection, and community. From our fireside chat on the future of angel investing to a panel on scaling through community capital, the evening was a powerful reflection of what we’ve built together—and where we’re heading next.

We were proud to present our 2025 Community Capital Awards to Sheringham Distillery, HOVR, and Blossom Social. While Sheringham wasn’t able to join us in person, Christian from HOVR and Max from Blossom accepted the awards on stage and shared thoughtful insights on what it means to turn community into momentum.

A heartfelt thank you to our generous event sponsors—Fasken, Potomac Growth, Western Pacific Trust Company, HRU MIC, Become. Media, Collective Arts, and Proxies—for helping make the night possible.

And to our entire community of issuers, investors, and partners: we’re so grateful for your continued support and belief in what we’re building. We’ll be sharing a full recap next week with photos, stories, and reflections from the evening.

Here’s to the next decade of democratizing access to capital.
